Depression vs Burnout: How to Tell the Difference

It is 3am, and you are awake again. Tomorrow's inbox is already playing in your head, and you know you will drag yourself through the day on coffee and willpower.

Maybe you snapped at your kids tonight over nothing. Maybe you sat in front of your laptop for an hour and could not make yourself start. Maybe Sunday evening now arrives with a knot in your stomach that stays until Friday.

And under all of it is a quiet question you have not said out loud: is this depression vs burnout, or am I just not coping like everyone else seems to? If that question is yours, you are in the right place. Keep reading.

You are not lazy. You are not weak. And you are not the only one lying awake wondering what is wrong with you.

We hear some version of this from adults across Ontario all the time. Burnout and depression can look almost identical from the inside. They overlap. They feed each other. And when you are exhausted, it is very hard to see clearly which one you are carrying.

This post will help you make sense of it. It is not a diagnosis. Only a qualified clinician can assess what is going on for you. But understanding the difference can help you ask for the kind of support that actually fits.

What It Is Quietly Costing You

Let's be honest about something first.

When you are running on empty, life does not stop. It just gets smaller.

You stop calling friends back. You tell your partner "I'm fine" so often that you both stop believing it. You are physically at the dinner table, but your mind is somewhere else, half planning, half dreading.

Your kids get the tired version of you. The short-tempered version. The one who says "not now" more than you would like.

The things that used to make you feel like you, the run, the music, the Saturday morning coffee with nowhere to be, slowly drop away. Not because you decided to quit them. Because there is nothing left over.

At work, you may be holding it together on the surface. But tasks that used to take an hour now take a day. You second-guess yourself. You wonder if people have noticed.

Here is the hard part. Most people wait. They wait for a vacation, for the project to end, for things to calm down. They wait until it gets bad enough to "count."

But every month of waiting has a cost. Less energy. Less patience. Less joy. Less of you, for the people you love and for yourself.

You do not have to keep paying it.

Why Burnout or Depression Is So Hard to Tell Apart

From the outside, burnout or depression can look almost the same: exhaustion, irritability, trouble focusing, pulling away from people, and a constant sense that nothing you do is enough.

Part of the confusion is that they feed each other. Months of relentless work stress can wear your mood down until it becomes something heavier. And depression can make even a job you like feel impossible to face.

Many of the people we work with are carrying both at once.

One gentle question to sit with: does the heaviness mostly live around work, or does it follow you into almost every corner of your life?

What Burnout Is (and Is Not)

The World Health Organization describes burnout in the ICD-11 as an occupational phenomenon, not a medical condition. It comes from chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed.

In other words, burnout is tied to your work. That might be an office job, a remote role, a caseload, or a business you built yourself.

Common signs of burnout

  • Feeling drained before the day has even started
  • Growing cynical, detached or short-tempered about work
  • Feeling less effective, even at things you used to do easily
  • Rest that helps a little on the weekend, then disappears by Monday morning

One telling clue: picture a few weeks completely away from that job. If you feel a flicker of relief, pay attention to it. That does not mean you need to quit. It means your environment is carrying a lot of the weight.

If this sounds like you, our workplace burnout therapy is built for exactly this.

What Depression Is

Depression is a mental health condition that tends to colour more than one part of life: work, home, relationships, and the way you see yourself. The Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) has a clear, plain-language overview if you want to read more.

Common signs of depression

  • A low, empty or numb mood most of the day, for two weeks or longer
  • Losing interest or pleasure in almost everything, not just work
  • Changes in sleep or appetite
  • Guilt, worthlessness or harsh self-talk that goes far beyond work
  • Slowed thinking, or feeling restless and on edge
  • Thoughts of death or suicide (please seek urgent help if this is happening)

With depression, a vacation or a lighter week often does not lift the fog the way you hoped. The heaviness tends to stay, even when the demands drop.

Depression vs Burnout: A Side-by-Side Look

Use this as a starting point for reflection, not a test you can pass or fail.

ClueMore often burnoutMore often depression
Main triggerWorkload, lack of control, little supportCan begin without a clear work trigger
Where it shows upMostly around work or caregivingMost days and most settings
MoodIrritable, detached, "I can't keep doing this job"Sad, empty, numb or hopeless about life in general
InterestWork feels pointless; hobbies may still sparkLittle interest in almost anything
Rest and time offHelps somewhat, then fadesOften does not restore energy or hope
How you see yourself"I'm failing at this role""I'm a failure" in a broader sense

If you found yourself nodding along to both columns, that is very common. It is okay. Therapy can hold the work piece and the mood piece together, without forcing a single label on you on day one.

When Burnout Turns Into Depression

Burnout does not always stay in its lane. When stress goes on for a long time without real recovery, it can slowly shift into depression.

Some signs this may be happening:

  • The low mood now shows up on weekends and holidays, not just workdays
  • You have stopped enjoying people and activities outside of work
  • Your self-criticism has moved from "I'm bad at this job" to "I'm not good enough"
  • You feel hopeless about the future, not only about your role

If you notice these shifts, please do not wait for them to get worse. This is a good moment to talk with someone. Our page on online depression therapy in Ontario explains how we work with low mood.

You Don't Have to Hit Rock Bottom to Reach Out

A lot of people tell themselves it is not bad enough yet. Other people have it worse. I should be able to handle this.

You do not need to be falling apart to deserve support. Struggling is enough.

You also do not need to know whether it is depression or burnout before you reach out. That is not your job. Figuring it out together is part of the work.

And you do not need the perfect words. "I'm tired all the time and I don't feel like myself" is a perfectly good place to start.

Small Things That Help While You Sort It Out

Name it without minimizing it

Burnout language can push people to "just push through." Depression language can make people wait, afraid of what it might mean. You are allowed to simply say: something is not right, and I deserve support.

Check in with your body

Sleep, nutrition, alcohol, medications and physical health all affect mood and energy. A family doctor or nurse practitioner can help rule out other contributors while you explore therapy.

Shrink the recovery gap

If burnout is a big part of it, small boundaries matter: a firm end to the workday, real breaks, and saying no to one extra commitment. Our post on workplace boundaries scripts has words you can borrow.

Talk to someone trained to see the whole picture

A depression therapist Ontario adults can see online can help you untangle what belongs to work, what belongs to mood, and what to do next. Approaches like CBT and behavioural activation are practical and built around small, doable steps.

Imagine What It Could Feel Like

Now picture a few months from now.

You sleep through the night. Not every night, maybe, but more often than not. You wake up and the dread is not already waiting for you.

Monday morning is just Monday morning.

You laugh with your partner at something silly, and you realize you are actually there, present, not somewhere else in your head.

You have patience for your kids again. You notice the small good moments instead of just getting through them.

Work feels manageable. You know where your limits are, and you can say so without guilt.

You feel like yourself. The version of you that you have been missing.

We cannot promise exactly how therapy will unfold for you. Everyone's path is different. But many people find that with the right support, things that felt stuck start to move. Energy returns. Hope returns. Life gets bigger again.

You deserve to feel like yourself again. The first step is a short, easy conversation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you have burnout and depression at the same time?

Yes. They often overlap, and long-term burnout can increase the risk of depression. A therapist can help you work on both at once.

Will a vacation fix burnout?

Time off can ease burnout for a while, but the relief often fades if the underlying work stress does not change. If time off does not help at all, it may be worth exploring whether depression is part of the picture.

How do I know if I need a depression therapist in Ontario?

If low mood, loss of interest or hopelessness have lasted two weeks or more, or are affecting your work, relationships or daily life, it is a good time to talk with a professional.

Is online therapy helpful for burnout and depression?

Many adults find secure video therapy just as helpful as in-person sessions, and easier to fit into a demanding schedule.

You've Been Carrying This Long Enough

You have spent a long time showing up for everyone else. Your job. Your family. Your inbox.

It is okay to show up for yourself now.

You do not have to figure out whether it is depression or burnout first. You do not have to wait until it gets worse. You just have to take one small step.

Book a free 15-minute video consult. Ask your questions. See how it feels to talk to someone who gets it. If it is not the right fit, that is completely fine.

The version of you who sleeps well, laughs easily and looks forward to the weekend is still there. Let's go find them together.
