Two people holding warm mugs across a kitchen table, a quiet moment of reconnection

Does this sound familiar?

Most couples do not come to therapy because they stopped caring. They come because caring started to feel like hard work.

  • You have the same fight on repeat, and neither of you can remember how it started.
  • One of you pushes to talk it out while the other shuts down or walks away.
  • You feel more like roommates or co-managers of a household than partners.
  • Small comments land like big attacks, and you both end up defending instead of listening.
  • Trust was broken, and you are not sure how to rebuild it, or whether you can.
  • Moving in together, a new baby, a new job, or a move to Canada has changed everything between you.
  • Physical and emotional closeness has faded, and talking about it feels impossible.
  • You come from different cultures, languages, or families, and some things keep getting lost in translation.

If you recognised yourselves here, you are not failing. You are stuck, and stuck is something you can work through together.

What couples work on in therapy

Every relationship is different, so sessions are shaped around what is happening between the two of you. Common reasons couples reach out include:

Communication

Learning to say what you actually mean, and to hear what your partner is really asking for underneath the words.

Conflict that keeps repeating

Understanding the pattern you get caught in, so arguments can cool down sooner and end with repair instead of distance.

Trust and infidelity

A careful, non-judgemental space to talk about what happened, make room for each person's hurt, and decide what rebuilding could look like.

Moving in and cohabitation

Chores, money, space, and routines can turn into daily friction. We explore this more in our article on why couples fight after moving in.

Life transitions

New jobs, new cities, new parents, aging family members, or immigration. Big changes put pressure on even strong relationships.

Intimacy and disconnection

When closeness has faded, therapy can help you talk about it honestly and gently, without blame.

Cultural and bilingual couples

Different backgrounds bring richness and sometimes misunderstanding. Sessions can be held in English or Spanish, so both partners can express themselves fully.

If the struggle is more about saying no, people-pleasing, or keeping your own needs in view, our individual therapy for boundaries and relationships may also help.

How online couples therapy works

  1. 1

    Free 15-minute consult

A short video call with one or both of you to talk about what is going on, ask questions, and see if it feels like a good fit.

  2. 2

    Confidential online intake

You each complete a secure intake form online, so your therapist understands both perspectives before you meet.

  3. 3

    Your first session together

Join by secure video from home, or from two different locations anywhere in Ontario. Sessions are 50 minutes, with 75-minute extended sessions available.

Many couples find it easier to open up from the comfort of home, and online sessions mean no commute, no babysitter scramble, and no sitting in a waiting room together after a hard week. Curious about the evidence? Read is virtual therapy as effective as in-person. We see clients online across Ontario, and in-person sessions can be discussed when they are truly needed.

A note on safety

Couples therapy may not be appropriate when there is abuse, violence, or a partner feels afraid. In those situations, individual support is often the safer first step. If you are in immediate danger, call 911. For 24/7 support in Ontario, contact the Assaulted Women's Helpline at 1-866-863-0511 (awhl.org), or call or text 9-8-8 for the Suicide Crisis Helpline.
